These guys are dressed in the colours of the Brazilian flag.

A close-up of one of the floats from the 'Mocidade' school. These people are performing on a rope of material.

24rio.jpg 400x266
A view atop the above float, with the stadium seats behind. The circles you see on top are metal hoops in which the performers of this particular float pose.

19girl.jpg 251x400
Each band is lead by a 'queen'.

18rio.jpg 400x264
Each samba school is presented by a principal couple. The lady, called the 'Porta Bandeira', or 'flag carrier' has exactly that duty - to cary the flag of the school; the mans is to accompany and display the lady.

17rio.jpg 400x262
The school's band; of which each schol can have only one.

16rio.jpg 400x269
Each school must have from six to eight floats. The first float of each school must display the theme, in the schools colours.

15rio.jpg 400x265
One of the following floats.

14rio.jpg 400x276
The 'Baiana' section. A Baiana is a person born in the state of Baiha, Brazil.

11rio.jpg 400x272
One of the more diversley coloured floats.

10rio.jpg 450x300
It looks like the theme of this float is animals. I think the brown thing at the front is a giant ant, with a hiena behind.

08rio.jpg 301x450
Another Porta Bandeira. Those head pieces way a ton, due to the metal structure used to make sure they don't break, bend or fall off during all the spinning and dancing in the parade.

07rio.jpg 400x267
The percussion band of another school.

06rio.jpg 400x265
Each school is lead by a group whose purpose is to draw attention to the rest of their parade. In portuguese it is called the 'Comissão de frente', although it doesn't give much meaning in the direct translation - 'front commission'. This particular group represent Brazilian indians.

05rio.jpg 325x450
The presenter of the front commission.

04rio.jpg 400x265
Each person takes pride in their part - even if it is being a flower.

03rio.jpg 280x400
Another Reina da bateria. This lady, Susana Werner is very popular, not only for her great body. She is a Brazilian actress who became popular when she started going out with 'Ronaldinho' - the best Brazilian football player in the world (or at least that's how they describe him here). Ironically he plays for Italy.

...and again.
